David
Merritt, Project Director, Center for Health Transformation
and the Gingrich Group
David
Merritt is a project director at the Center for Health Transformation
and the Gingrich Group. The Center, headed by former Speaker
Newt Gingrich, is a collaboration of public and private
sector leaders dedicated to transforming health and healthcare
in America. David advises Speaker Gingrich and leads the
Center’s projects on health information technology
and covering the uninsured.
He
works extensively with Congressional offices, the Bush administration,
the media, and private sector leaders. He works closely
with members of the Center on strategic planning and consulting.
He is the editor of the book Paper Kills: Transforming Health
and Health with Information Technology, published by CHT
Press. He was appointed by Virginia Governor Tim Kaine to
serve on the governor’s Health Information Technology
Council, where he chairs the Business Case Subcommittee.
He was also serves on the Improving Quality, Consumer Awareness,
and Prevention Workgroup of Governor Kaine’s Health
Reform Commission. He also serves on advisory boards to
ICW, a German IT company, and the Center for Community Leadership,
an initiative of Misys Healthcare Systems.
His
writing has been widely published, including the Chicago
Tribune, Boston Globe, Chicago Sun-Times, Atlanta Journal-Constitution,
Arizona Republic, Miami Herald, and the Washington Times.
He is widely quoted in trade and national press, and has
been interviewed by the New York Times, USA Today, Wall
Street Journal, and ABC News. David is a frequent speaker
with Center members, as well as with state and industry
leaders, such as the Southern Governors Association and
Citigroup.
Prior
to joining the Center, David was with America’s Health
Insurance Plans, directing the association’s educational
programs with a primary focus on federal legislative and
regulatory issues. He earned his Master’s degree in
political science from Loyola University Chicago, with a
primary focus on political theory and executive powers,
and he earned his Bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan
University.
